    Collier, Anne (American, b. 1970)

American photographer Anne Collier uses existing images and materials such as albums, cassettes, posters, artworks, and ephemera. By cropping or placing them on neutral backgrounds, she strips them of their original connotations and highlights references to pop culture, clichés, feminism and common conventions. Here, her present work “I Wish,” she places focus on self-help books and popular New Age type philosophy. As described in an article about the artist by Dan Fox in Frieze magazine, “… I Wish (2008), under the header ‘What Do You Wish For?’ and a friendly drawing of a shooting star, a self-help manual tells us that: ‘One of the best ways to receive psychic guidance is to organize your goals and desires and create a wish list of those things that are most important to you now.’ It leaves space for you to note down 21 wishes.”

Born in 1970 in Los Angeles, Collier earned her BFA in photography from the California Institute of Art in 1993. She later attended the University of California, Los Angeles where she earned her MFA in 2001. She has exhibited her work extensively and her artwork is housed in important public collections, including Tate Museum, London, England; the Guggenheim Museum and Museum of Modern Art, New York; Chicago Art Institute, Illinois; Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, California, among many others.
