Born in Brooklyn, New York, Porfirio DiDonna studied at Pratt Institute and later attended Columbia University for his graduate degree in fine art. An accomplished pianist, DiDonna’s early paintings of dots, dashes, and tight lines echoed the rhythmic patterns of music. The son of Italian immigrants of Catholic faith, DiDonna was also greatly influenced by the awe that religious faith can inspire- especially evident in his works from the 1980s such as the present painting. Here, his linear style loosened to include arcs and “windows,” in the form of hourglass shapes, forms that he later referred to as a “roads.”

DiDonna held a studio in Manhattan and was awarded several grants from the National Endowment, the NY State CAPS, and the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation. He exhibited his artwork in New York at OK Harris Gallery and Edward Thorp Gallery, and later in San Francisco at Leah Levy Gallery, and in Boston at Neilson Gallery, who currently represent the artist’s estate after his early death in 1986 at the age of forty-four.
