A beautiful, late 19th century French Aubusson carpet having lush, leafy rose branches on the cream field within a sand scrolling vinery border. The towns of Aubusson and Felletin, in the Creuse region of France, are renowned for their intricate, flat-woven carpets and tapestries of great quality and intricate designs. Although textile workshops were located in that region in the 14th century, Aubusson was granted Royal Manufactory under King Louis XIV in 1665 and gained prominence throughout the European nobility. Typical of late 19th century taste, Aubusson textile designs often reproduced styles of earlier periods, as evident in the present example that echoes both Rococo and classical motifs.
