Fink, Aaron (American, b. 1955)

Aaron Fink’s preferred subjects to paint are commonplace objects such as fruit, vegetables, ice cream, pie slices and coffee mugs that he often paints multiple versions of. The artist explains, “after I’ve worked with an object for a while, it becomes more of a vehicle for exploring the painting medium itself.” Fink builds his compositions with multiple layers of paint, using squeegees and rakes to heighten textures; as well as rinses the surface to blend colors together.

Originally from Boston, Massachusetts, Fink earned his BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art, and later his MFA from Yale University School of Art. He has exhibited his paintings throughout the United States and in Europe, Japan and Australia. Fink has had solo exhibitions at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the Muskegon Museum of Art, Michigan, the Rockford Art Museum, Illinois, and Colorado State University, Fort Collins. In 2002 a monograph on Fink’s work, Out of the Ordinary, was published by Eleanor Heartney. Fink’s work is represented in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Hara Museum, Tokyo, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, the Museum of Modern Art, New York and the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC, among many others. Fink currently divides his time between Boston and Rockport, Massachusetts.
